What is PKD and PLD?
A team of Yale researchers is studying polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and polycystic liver disease (PLD) to determine which genes are involved in the formation of cysts.
What does PKD mean?
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys, causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. Cysts are noncancerous round sacs containing fluid.
Is PKD a Ciliopathy?
Autosomal Dominant PKD The most common inherited cause of kidney failure, ADPKD is a systemic ciliopathy that presents with progressive renal cyst expansion and extrarenal manifestations following loss-of-function mutations in the genes PKD1 and PKD2 (Fig 3).
How do you confirm PKD?
For polycystic kidney disease, certain tests can detect the size and number of kidney cysts you have and evaluate the amount of healthy kidney tissue, including:
- Ultrasound. During an ultrasound, a wandlike device called a transducer is placed on your body.
- CT scan.
- MRI scan.
What is PKD belly?
Polycystic kidney disease causes enlarged kidneys that may cause an abnormally large abdomen. Pain or discomfort is more common with gas or constipation. If you are experiencing troublesome symptoms, check in with your doctor.
Is PKD a disability?
If your PKD prevents you from working, you may qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, including Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Is PKD1 dominant or recessive?
Most cases of polycystic kidney disease have an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. People with this condition are born with one mutated copy of the PKD1 or PKD2 gene in each cell. In about 90 percent of these cases, an affected person inherits the mutation from one affected parent .
How can I slow my PKD?
At present, there is no cure for PKD. However, a lot of research is being done. Recent studies suggest that drinking plain water throughout the day and avoiding caffeine in beverages can slow the growth of cysts.
