Part of the reason that a humbucker sounds muddy is that it’s suffering from phase and other distortions between the two widely spaced coils. Single coils and single-coil size humbuckers sound a lot cleaner in the neck position.
Are humbuckers good for clean tones?
Hot single-coil pickups can work okay for clean sounds, but I prefer medium-output single-coils—especially with Strat-style pickups—because they will generally have more clarity. If cleans with clarity are important to you, I suggest sticking with humbucking pickups that are under 10k ohms.

What makes a pickup bright?
The number of turns of coil wire will dictate the voltage created – how ‘hot’ the pickup is. So, in essence, the more turns of wire will generate more voltage and a stronger signal. Generally speaking, more turns of wire will create a louder pickup, and fewer turns of wire will equate to a weaker pickup.
