Hualalai is the mountain that towers above Kona-Kailua. It is not part of the National Park. The only National Park near Hualalai is the Koloko-Honokohau historic park across from Costco. You can hike up on the jungle slopes of Hualalai from various trail heads from Koloko road.

Hualālai/Last eruption
Hualālai last erupted in 1800–1801. This eruption produced very fluid alkalic basalt lava flows that entered the ocean off the western tip of Hawaiʻi island. Although five vents were active at the time, only two produced flows that eventually reached the ocean.

Getting to Hualalai’s Summit In approx 6.4 miles of relentless uphill travel, turn left on Huehue St. and go another 7/10 miles to the end of the road. This road is wide, smooth and paved all the way to the end. Park, find the gravel/dirt road, and head up the hill.
