How often should you grease Speedplay pedals?
every 2000 miles
Speedplay recommends that you grease the bearings with a synthetic, waterproof grease every 2000 miles or more frequently if you ride in wet or dusty conditions. If the pedals spin freely by hand (more than 1/2 turn before stopping), inject grease immediately to avoid damage to the bearings and spindles.
Should I put grease on pedals?
Pedals don’t require grease or lubrication to the extent a bike chain or gears would since these parts are expensive and highly complex to replace. Speedplay Fanboy They contain bearings within the pedal, which need replacement grease every 2000 miles.
When should I replace my Speedplay pedals?
To be fair they do last a long time. I’ve had to replace about three times in six years. I try and avoid walking on cleats, but I find that it is the metal spring in the cleat which wears away first. Speedplay are unique in having the attachment mechanism in the cleat itself rather than the pedal.
Can I use Vaseline as pedal grease?
You can use Vaseline (petroleum jelly) as a bike lubricant without issues. However, it melts at lower temperatures (40-60 degrees Celsius) as compared to grease. All the same, when you have no grease, Vaseline would be ideal for a quick alternative. In addition, a white lithium grease tub is cheaper than Vaseline.
Should you grease threads?
It’s necessary to grease pedal threads to prevent corrosion and facilitate installation. If the pedal threads aren’t greased, the pedals will fuse with the crank arms, making removal a difficult task. You can use anti-seize compounds too because the involved parts aren’t in dynamic motion.
Can I use any grease for bike pedals?
Heavier automotive bearing grease is not ideal for cables, something like sewing machine oil or finish line is better (and can also be used on pedal threads, you just need some sort of lube).
