How much is a fire pit glass?
In a natural gas fire pit or fireplace, we recommend using 2″-3″ of glass to cover the burner. In a propane fire pit or fireplace, we recommend using no more than 1″ of glass to cover the burner (see propane question).
Can you use any glass in a fire pit?
Fire glass, unlike regular glass shards, do not pop or crack during a fire. Never use other glass pieces in a fire pit, as they may crack, pop, or shoot several shards onto unsuspecting guests. Burning tempered glass, such as car windows, not specifically designed for fire burning can cause toxic fumes to be released.
Can you use broken glass in a fire pit?
It is important for safety reasons to buy quality fire glass that is manufactured for the specific purposes of being used in fire pits and fire places. Never use just any old broken glass, like wine or beer bottles. The issue can be smoke, toxic fumes and exploding.
Does fire glass radiate heat?
When your burner pan is filled with fire glass, it will radiate up to 4 times more heat than wood or artificial logs. The glass heats and provides a constant flow of warmth.
Does fire glass catch fire?
So, is fire glass flammable? No, fire glass is not flammable. Fire glass is glass that has been specially tempered to withstand high heat for prolonged periods of time. Authentic fire glass comes with a heat rating, such as 1400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Can you put too much glass in a fire pit?
If using a propane fire pit or fireplace there should not be more than an inch of fire glass. This is enough to cover the burning in this type of fire appliance.
Why is my fire glass popping?
This typically happens when tempered fire glass is damp or wet and the burner is turned on. The heating of the moisture causes an expansion as it turns to a gas which may cause some of the cracked (but not completely broken) pieces of tempered glass to separate into pieces.
Does fire glass turn black?
If your fire glass is turning black this is most likely soot being deposited on your fire glass due to the gas not burning completely. What you’re looking at, actually, is a fine coating of black soot on the surface, which happens when the gas in your fire pit or fireplace isn’t burning properly.
How do I keep my fire glass from turning black?
Try burning harder woods like oak, cherry, or walnut, and avoid burning woods known for their higher sap content. If your wood stove has a heat setting, try turning the heat controls up a few notches. Hotter fires will keep your glass cleaner.
Do you have to season fire glass?
Good quality fireplace glass will last a lifetime under normal conditions and should carry a lifetime warranty. It is also very easy to maintain. Depending on whether you cover your fire pit when not in use, it may only need to be washed once per season.
