Do you need to soak shapton glass stones?
No, Shapton stones do not need to be soaked except the very first time after purchase. We do recommend that on first use, you pre-soak the stone in water for five to six minutes to secure even smoother sharpening.

How do you sharpen Shapton stones?
If the stone is too soft, you need to grind down to a firm surface. Sand off the soft layer with a coarse sharpening powder, rinse and clean the stone thoroughly with water; then use a finer silicon carbide powder to finish the surface.

Are shapton stones good?
The Shapton stones sharpen a bit faster. They remove material quicker and the higher hardness also allows you to move quicker. It doesn’t mean the Naniwa stones are of inferior quality, because we are still comparing the best two brands out there. A more interesting aspect is the difference in thickness.

Answer: Yes, the Shapton stone is made of ceramic and needs to be flattened frequently. To do this I use a 300 /1000 diamond stone made by Trend. I flatten the stone on the 300 grit side.
