You can make compost tea with or without aeration, but with aeration is the far superior method. This provides oxygen to the aerobic organisms you want to help flourish during the brewing process. To use the aerated method, you can either purchase a compost tea brewer or you can make your own.

How much air do you put in compost tea?
You would want to source a 1.25 – 2 cfm air pump to get proper aeration. I always err on the side of adding too much air since it’s not going to hurt anything. Even the best compost tea brewer won’t make good tea if you don’t start with good compost.
How long will aerated compost tea last?
Aerobic tea brews last up to 24 hours, in order to maximize the number of beneficial aerobic bacteria and fungi living in the liquid. After 24-48 hours, unless constant aeration is re-applied, most of the good aerobic microbes have lost their maximum powers, and have either died off or gone dormant.
Can you brew compost tea too long?
Theoretically the longer the compost tea “brews,” the better it will be, except that within a few days (unless carefully aerated) the mixture will go anaerobic, meaning there is little to no oxygen within it.
Can compost tea burn plants?
Teas made from compost that is primarily plant based can be used nearly daily if necessary. Those with a high nitrogen content, such as composted manure, can still burn plants and should be applied no more than once per month in a heavily diluted state.
Can you use too much compost tea?
With properly made compost tea possessing a diversity of active aerobic organisms, you can never apply too much compost tea. For best results use teas at full-strength. Apply as a soil drench or root dip when transplanting. Apply at regular watering intervals for outstanding results.
How do you know when compost tea is ready?
With the pump off, walk away for about 20 minutes so that the compost can settle to the bottom, leaving mostly water at the top – or rather, tea. When it’s had time to settle, you’ll be ready to strain the mixture.
